Certainly I think that, were there an active movement of politicised experimental prose writers, that they would be a much better object of criticism and address than reactionary poets. But there isn’t one, is there? Well, no, but there are successful left wing writers of “prose fiction” who (at least I assume) are attempting to float Marxist criticism into the indices of popular consciousness. If we think that their work is quixotic, historically insensate, that the forms have become desiccated or have faded to sepia, shouldn’t we be coming out and saying it, if not in ten page critical reviews then at least in a couple of terse, closely argued paragraphs? And what about contemporary visual art? Many of my politicised academic (though not always “middle class”) friends in London are somehow associated with the visual arts, chiefly I believe because the visual arts (or “art”, as the saying goes) is so poorly defined as a discipline; though mainly because so much money sloshes into the main receptacles of “Art” that one is more entitled to anticipate from time to time a little spontaneous overflow into its innumerable gutters. One of the reasons that the event at the Historical Materialist conference was so tremendously exciting for me is that it was attended by a great number of those Marxists whose livelihoods are temporarily or inadequately sustained by the crumbs which trickle down from the table at which Big Art delivers its flatulent graces to Our Father Who Art Dumping Chemicals Into The Villages of Nigeria.
